FREE WEBINAR – Integrating Indigenous Pedagogies into Literacy

 In NEWS

Early literacy is essential to a child’s development—it supports language growth, cognitive development, social and emotional learning, and future academic success. However, most literacy education uses a narrow definition of literacy that only focuses on reading and writing. This approach overlooks Indigenous languages, oral traditions, and land-based knowledge, leaving many Indigenous students without meaningful representation in their learning.

Are you wondering how you can broaden your literacy teaching to be more inclusive of Indigenous worldviews? In this webinar, Education Consultant Danielle Mior explores how to integrate Indigenous pedagogies into early literacy development. Drawing on storytelling, oral traditions, and land-based learning, Danielle shares practical strategies for expanding definitions of literacy and creating more culturally responsive classrooms that reflect and respect the knowledge systems of Indigenous communities.

Note

This webinar discusses integrating Indigenous pedagogies into early literacy through the 8 Aboriginal Ways of Learning Framework. This pedagogical framework was developed in Australia and emerged from a research project involving many educational staff. It is a constantly developing framework, contributed to by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal teachers, with intentions to act as a culturally safe point of entry for educators who are beginning to engage with Indigenous knowledge and cross-cultural dialogue in their community (or communities).

We encourage you to dive deeper into the 8 Ways pedagogy framework and continue to expand your learning. Please note their Protocol for using the information from this site — if you use something from here, please put something back. Share and discuss with others how you are using the framework.

The term Aboriginal is used here because it reflects the name of the framework developed in Australia. We recognize that terminology preferences vary among different locations and want to honour all choices appropriately.
