Indigenous Peoples have long been the residents and stewards of the unceded lands of Montréal. We recognize the presence of these historical and contemporary communities and their care of this land.

The Kanien’kehá:ka Nation is the recognized steward of the land. The Traditional Territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka has long acted as a meeting place amongst many First Nations—Huron/Wendat, Abenaki, and Anishinaabeg. The Kanien’kehá:ka Nation is a founding Nation of the Haudenosaunee/People of the Longhouse Confederacy, including the Seneca, Tuscarora, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oneida Nations.

We honour the history of the original people of this territory. We recognize this as a step towards reconciliation, building trust, and creating relationships. We respect the connections with the past, present, and future in our ongoing relationships with Indigenous Peoples.
