About the Media Designer
Media Designers are task-oriented creative thinkers and problem-solvers who can bring ideas and scripts to life and whose visual design skills translate into high-quality, engaging content. They like taking charge of their own assignments and seeing the results of their work. Doing this job successfully requires focus on the immediate work to be done. Because this is a creative, technical position and because it requires a high level of expertise and accuracy, it provides an opportunity to thoroughly plan in order to do the job right.

What you will do:

  • Sort and organize recorded video footage and b-roll to create a cohesive story
  • Edit footage into timelines and make tasteful use of editing and transitions
  • Combine visual footage with audio sound effects, dialogue, ambient sound and/or music
  • Look online for additional assets (stock footage, appropriate icons, relevant images) while being mindful of copyright, licenses, and appropriate imagery.
  • Work in Adobe InDesign to create print deliverables
  • Create additional assets (icons, drawings from reference material)
  • Create rough and final cuts
  • Edit audio files
  • Work from existing illustrations to create animated sequences
  • Create engaging and culturally-relevant 2D animations and motion graphics
  • Discuss project timelines and goals with the team
  • Be on the lookout for new tools and processes to maximize efficiency.

Education, Training, & Experience Requirements

  • A degree in film studies, cinematography, or a related field
  • Excellent knowledge of animation
  • Knowledge of storyboarding, an asset
  • Digital illustration skills, an asset
  • A strong education background and/or video editing skills with the ability to develop compelling and effective educational content for diverse learning needs
  • Previous experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Great storytelling skills with the ability to communicate well visually
  • Proficient in layout design for digital and print resources
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Solid experience with digital technology and editing software packages (e.g., Premiere Pro, After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, iZotope)
  • An ability to create large volumes of content while maintaining quality
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills
  • Solid attention to detail animation timing, easing, etc.
  • Excellent English proofreading and editing skills
  • Knowledge of basic sound editing (e.g., cleaning background noise)
  • Comfort recording voiceovers and audio clips, an asset

About the Education Specialist (Instructional Designer)
This job focuses on producing high-quality, detailed work based on established standards, guidelines and procedures. This is a chance to work in a professional work environment where you are set up to achieve your goals consistently and efficiently, with just the right support and structure.

What you will do:
You will create engaging resources – a mix of videos, handouts, and slides – for our online platform. You will use your teaching experience and subject matter expertise to research topics, develop content outlines, and write age-appropriate scripts that include visual cues for our media design team. You will be open to feedback and develop innovative ways to engage learners in an online learning setting.

Education, Training, & Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Education (relevant Master’s or Ph.D., an asset)
  • 2+ years of teaching or facilitating experience
  • Subject matter expertise and experience teaching one or more of the following areas: English language arts, math, science, social studies and/or cultural studies for Grades K-12
  • Experience working in a First Nations community or with Indigenous groups
  • Understanding of Indigenous ways of teaching and learning
  • Experience designing online lessons and/or developing curriculum
  • Excellent English writing, proofreading, and editing skills

Role Summary

You will be a pedagogical expert who delivers education consulting services to our partner communities and schools. You will work with education authorities, principals, educators, Elders and other community stakeholders to create engaging, culturally relevant, curriculum-aligned learning materials. You will often travel to communities with a videographer to film cultural events, record interviews with Elders, and connect with the needs of the communities you serve. Once materials have been gathered, you will coordinate small ad hoc project teams to create learning materials, typically consisting of a media designer and 1-2 instructional designers.

What you will do:

  • Work with multiple Indigenous communities and organizations.
  • Lead small project-based teams to create engaging content following Learning Bird’s methods and processes.
  • Plan and develop engaging educational resource outlines and scripts, such as videos, audio files, presentations, and activity sheets.
  • Review content created by others to ensure pedagogical, cultural, and contextual fit with the communities they work with.
  • Oversee the work of videographers to gather relevant footage in community.
  • Initiate and lead regular meetings with project teams.
  • Initiate and lead regular meetings with community partners.
  • Track team progress against time allocations and adjust plans.
  • Escalate delivery issues to the appropriate Learning Bird manager.
  • Travel to remote communities to meet partners, deliver teacher training workshops, and collect relevant source materials (e.g. photos, maps, translations, conduct interviews, etc.)
  • Collaborate with administrators, educators, and community members.
  • Conduct interviews with local Elders and knowledge keepers respecting protocol and cultural norms.
  • Ensure all learning materials are consistent in style and pedagogy.
  • Communicate partner needs and expectations related to the design and development of their resources to the project team.
  • Gather partner feedback and integrate comments into the final resources.
  • Identify opportunities for further collaboration with partners and coordinate follow-up with the business development team.

Training and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent, Master’s or Ph.D., an asset.
  • 3+ years in a K-12 classroom in Canada
  • Experience working with and in Indigenous communities
