Xet̓ólacw Community School is deeply committed to education that connects youth to Lil̓wat language, land, and cultural identity. Since 2016, Learning Bird has supported this work by collaborating with educators to expand the school’s collection of classroom resources grounded in local knowledge and teachings.
Our early work focused on strengthening language resources for classroom use. Together, we expanded the school’s ucwalmícwts materials by creating vocabulary videos, printable handouts, flashcards, and digitized booklets that support both immersion and language classes. These materials help build foundational language skills while ensuring consistent access across grade levels.
From there, we collaborated with fluent speakers and educators to develop illustrated story videos based on Lillooet legends and local histories. By pairing community artwork with fluent narration, these videos bring language and story together in ways that feel familiar and locally grounded.
As the partnership evolved, we broadened the scope of resources. We co-created culturally relevant math and science materials that draw on traditional food systems and seasonal knowledge. We developed resource kits on salmon and traditional fishing practices that connect language learning with land-based teachings.
Throughout this time, we’ve also recorded more than 100 interviews with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders. These videos document teachings on governance, inherent rights, ceremonies, spirituality, traditional medicines, and key moments in community history.
Our current work focuses on a digital, interactive map of Lil̓wat Nation’s Traditional Territory. This project will feature audio recordings of place names in ucwalmícwts and integrate existing Elder teachings, further strengthening connections between land, language, and learning.
Each phase of this partnership reflects the leadership of Lil̓wat educators and their dedication to ensuring that youth grow up with a strong sense of identity and belonging.
