In 2023 and 2024, Learning Bird worked with the Matawa Education and Care Centre (MECC) at Matawa First Nations to create classroom-ready resources aligned with their existing Fishnet and Moccasin curricula.
These resources help teachers throughout all nine Matawa First Nations integrate Traditional Knowledge and Anishinaabe language into classroom learning.
Each resource kit includes tutorial videos and cultural teachings that highlight the significance of fishnet making and moccasin sewing and integrate Anishinaabe vocabulary connected to each practice.

These resources support hands-on learning and promote the use of Anishinaabe in culturally meaningful ways, helping learners build both skills and connection to their identity.
“Working with Learning Bird to create these resources was a great experience. They helped us document each step involved in making fish nets and moccasins. Now, youth across all the Matawa First Nation community schools can learn how to make them while speaking their language.
This [project] is very much connected to the work I do. Mental health is interconnected to who we are as Anishinawbe people. When we really walk in culture, we can begin to feel good in our body [and] life. It feels right. It is who we are. When we create, we are living in a good way. I’m thinking of the person who will enjoy my gift or craft, and that supports my well-being as well.
Same as speaking our language – I AM Ojibway, and my language is distinct, and it’s my expression of self. The language feeds my mind, soul, and heart, as does creating crafts. It is wellness.”
